As we head into a new school year, many kids (and caregivers!) may feel a mix of excitement and jitters - which makes sense since it's the same biological processes! What makes one "excitement" and one "anxiety" is simply our brain's appraisal of how it will play out. And THAT is usually based on our learning histories (previous experience).
So, it's completely normal! For children with autism and related diagnoses, those feelings can be especially strong, since changes in routine, new environments, and new people can add extra layers of uncertainty.
It’s important to remember: the opposite of anxiety isn’t calm—it’s security. And security often comes from having the right information. When teachers and school staff know your child as an individual—their strengths, challenges, communication style, and what helps them succeed—everyone feels more secure.
